MIA Terminal D SkyTrain Rehabilitation
Location: Miami, FL Industry: Government
The Miami International Airport (MIA) Terminal D SkyTrain Rehabilitation is a multi-phase structural restoration program supporting one of the nation's busiest airport transportation systems. Serving American Airlines' Terminal D, the SkyTrain is a critical Automated People Mover (APM) that transports thousands of passengers daily throughout the North Terminal complex.
Following the discovery of extensive Alkali-Silica Reaction (ASR) deterioration within the reinforced concrete substructure, the Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD) suspended SkyTrain operations in 2023 to allow for a comprehensive structural rehabilitation program. As part of Miami-Dade County's ongoing infrastructure modernization initiatives, the project focuses on restoring the structural integrity, durability, and long-term performance of the elevated guideway system while preparing the facility for decades of continued service.

Industry: Government
Location: Miami, FL
KLINE serves as the Structural Engineer of Record (EOR) for all phases of the SkyTrain rehabilitation program, leading the structural evaluation, repair design, construction engineering, and technical oversight of the restoration efforts. Working closely with Miami-Dade Aviation Department (MDAD), HNTB, and Structural Builders & Restorations (SBR), KLINE developed phased repair strategies to address varying levels of ASR deterioration while minimizing impacts to ongoing airport operations.
KLINE's services include detailed structural investigations utilizing field assessments, concrete coring, and Ground Penetrating Radar (GPR) to evaluate crack propagation, reinforcement locations, and material integrity. Based on these findings, the team designed customized repair solutions incorporating selective concrete removal and replacement, supplemental reinforcing steel, lithium nitrate treatment, CFRP strengthening, epoxy crack injection, waterproofing systems, and expansion joint rehabilitation.
Beyond repair design, KLINE continues to provide construction administration services, including review of RFIs, shop drawings, and contractor submittals; field observations; as-built documentation; and technical support throughout construction.
The program also includes the evaluation and preventive rehabilitation of more than 66 additional pier caps in Terminal D for crack evaluation and ASR treatment. Design of waterproofing details, epoxy injection solutions, and expansion joint remediation to ensure structural durability under operating conditions
From complex jack-blocking operations for bridge lifts to the rehabilitation of more than 60 pier caps and girders, KLINE's engineering leadership has been instrumental in extending the service life of this critical transportation asset while supporting the safe return of SkyTrain operations.
