Project Description

When Washington Dulles Airport opened in 1962 Route 28 had one lane in each direction. By 1991 it had been transformed from a two-lane to a six-lane route. In 2014, the Route 28 (Sully Road) Bridge over the Dulles Toll Road (DTR) (Route 267), a major artery through Northern Virginia, was in need of repair.

Kline was retained to analyze the existing structure and design a method for temporary jacking and blocking the main girders to allow for bearing replacement.

Kline’s approach used large hydraulic jacks to lift the bridge through the existing diaphragms which saved time and money for the contractor.

The jacks proposed for this project were equipped with locking rings which allowed the jack to act like a steel pedestal, thus there was no need for a separate blocking system.
