VDOT Route 28 Bridge over Route 267

When Washington Dulles Airport opened in 1962 Route 28 had one lane in each direction. By 1991 it had been transformed from a two-lane to a six-lane route. The Route 28 Bridge over the Dulles Toll Road (Route 267) was in need of repair..

KEC was retained to analyze the existing structure and design a method for temporary jacking and blocking the main girders to allow for bearing replacement.  KEC’s approach used large hydraulic jacks to lift the bridge through the existing diaphragms which saved time and money for the contractor. The project was completed in 2016.
