Schaumburg, IL • Repair

The Schaumburg Corporate Center, which includes two office buildings located at 1501 and 1515 E. Woodfield Road, was completed in 1985. Both structures are designed using conventionally-reinforced concrete slabs with wide, shallow post-tensioned beams. The building at 1501 is 5 stories with a typical beam size of 120" wide by 13" deep. The building at 1515 is 14 stories with a typical beam size of 60" wide by 16" deep. Due to the deterioration of the PT cables in several beams, the buildings' owner retained KEC to perform a structural analysis of all existing beams on all levels of the two buildings.

KEC's primary objective was to determine the structural adequacy of the beams, and whether there was sufficient reserve capacity in the original design to consider the beams safe in the event that a portion of the PT is lost. The results of the analysis which was peer-reviewed by an Illinois licensed structural engineer, was then used to determine which beams would require repair.
